The Sun is Bigger in the West
4:35 pm | 6 are hungry | Published in conversation |

I had this conversation with 2 friends a while ago (names, places, and exact time are not revealed to protect the innocents :)

west-girl (living in the very West of Singapore): I can’t remember the last time I saw sunset. It’s been a while…

central-guy (living in the central of Singapore): But you stay in the West, then you should be able to see the sunset.

west-girl: O yea you’re right, I’m 40km closer to the sun, that’s why the sunset is bigger in the West. Looks more beautiful too.

central-guy: Well yea you’re closer to the West what.

Then west-girl spent about 10 more minutes explaining why it doesn’t matter whether you stay in the central or west of Singapore, you’d still be able to see sunrise or sunset, and the sunset is not bigger in the West of Singapore, while I started laughing uncontrollably.

[silent here]

central-guy: (looking at me with puzzled look) ….. I still don’t understand why it’s funny…..

  • haha i think i didnt get the point across properly. it s not a logical point of view. i took a lot of photos of sunset, & i find that i ve come across more beautiful sunsets in the west (particularly fr the window of my house) than when i m in other parts of the island.

it s not logical or scientific but it s what i experienced & believed. whenever i go home fr ofc, i always look at the sunset sky. it never match up to those i ve seen from my house window.

but maybe my first sentence started out wrong, it should ve been ” but you stay in the west, you should be able to see more beautiful sunsets.”

then again i nvr understand why the west girl had to go on for 10 mins, & i couldnt clarify.

this is not funny at all. i just didnt expressed myself well enuff. i don’t think it was mean of you to laugh at me. but isnt it sad that both of u didnt think that i m wiser to know what was being explained 10 mins, & that it was soemthing else i was trying to say? do u really think i m as stupid as this entry is trying to portray?

btw, i stayed in the west :P

  • hmmmm … to sum it up, logic & reason don’t help u understand why, when the same sun sets, there can be 1000 different sunsets at the same time :P

  • gatchaman, no need to be defensive leh. i was talking about a guy stayed in the west, so any similarity of conversation is purely coincidental *grin*

I had to put this up, it’s just sooo funny ;D ROFL. You’re talking as if Singapore is so big that it actually makes a difference to see the sunset in the East or West of the tiny island. You Singaporeans ah! People even often cannot see Singapore on the map because it’s only marked by a tiny dot. The timing of the best sunset could be different between east and west for probably 10 minutes, but it’s still the same sun, seen from a spot that’s a hair different on this gigantic earth.

A pretty sunset can be caused by many factors, the spot you see it from (high land or low land, not east or west!), the timing, weather, buildings around it, lights from those buildings, etc. If you say the sunset looks prettier from your house window, I believe it, because you see it from high floor, and it was probably the right timing. But definitely not because you see it from the West of Singapore =b

  • that s why i m bringing it up, it s something interesting i experienced, i m not trying say it s the truth. it s like someone say they ve seen a ghost, they shld be ridiculed unless they cant prove that ghost exist? of course u r free to not believe it. but it is definitely a less interesting world like this.

  • It’s not the sunset experience, it’s THE REASONING THAT IS FUNNY! Oh well, I’m the type of person that can laugh at myself, so I don’t find this post can be any particularly offensive to anybody. I’m sorry if you feel bad about it, I’ll be more careful about sensitive people in the future.

  • If anybody’s been following this thread, you’d probably wonder why these 2 people talked back and forth about insignificant topic in a blog’s comment (how geek-er can that be?), but stupid online text can make everything sounds COLD! Anyway, just to close the case, we cleared things up in the old way: MSN. LOL.
