29.May.2011 And The Winner is…

There were actually only 7 of you that entered in the giveaway so the chances were pretty good. But random.org has spoken and it picked number 6. And that is…

Claire of kiss a cloud for The Complete Maus!

Congratulations Claire!

Wish I could send you all a book because you’re all my favorite bloggers and people *

* including the ones that did not enter the giveaway but left nice comments :)

I’ve been quite frantic in keeping up with all the new things going on every single day, so my reading (and blog reading) has not gone back to its usual activity. But with work started just last week, I hope to start settling into routines of some sort soon-ish, reading or otherwise.

Also, I’ve been on tumblr a bit, trying it out. So I’m sharing Mee’s Adventures in Wonderland, in case you’re interested photography, traveling, London (for now), and the walking-with-camera side of me. It’d be mostly photos with short captions and quotes. One of my favorite so far:

piccadilly circus

Piccadilly Circus tube station (don’t you just love the name?)

On another note, I met Jo and Jackie on a Friday morning last week in Bracknell, a lovely little town, about an hour train trip from London, with awesome secondhand bookshops! Thanks to these two who dragged me from one shop to another, I came back with a good loot and started filling my bookshelf. What is a home with empty bookshelf, right? I can’t remember why we didn’t take picture of us. I wish we did!

Lastly, happy long weekend to those in UK! It baffled me that you can have a public holiday for no reason at all. Just “bank holiday”. One bank holiday at the beginning of May, and then one more at the end. That’s it. No reason. Well, I’m all for random public holiday! I was thinking to go to the Hay festival and stay for a night but it seems all cold and rainy for the weekend and I don’t feel like spending too much time outside. Maybe next weekend? Is any of you going or have gone before?

  • Congrats to Claire! And I wish I could have joined you in the bookshop trip with Jo & Jackie… Although I don’t need any moooooore books! :\

Gnoe, I have to leave all my books in Australia (though a few of them are coming with my boxes), so it is comforting to be able to get books cheaply here :).

  • I’m so pleased we managed to start to fill your empty bookshelves. I’m always willing to show you some more great bookshops, so let me know if you want another trip – we can ensure we take a photo on the next one.

I haven’t been to the Hay Festival before, but I have been to Hay and it is well worth a visit at any time of year. The whole town is filled with book shops!

    • mee says:

Thanks Jackie. Surely we will have another meet up sometime!

Wow a whole town full of book shops! I’m not sure if it’s too late to plan a trip there this weekend for the festival, but if not this weekend I will still go to Hay. Good to know it’s worth a visit any time of the year!

  • Bracknell! That’s where my cousin lives. How funny to think that book bloggers I read/follow are were in his town! The British and their Bank Holidays… my family are always telling me about days off work and school for Bank Holidays. Must be nice.

Definitely get yourself to Hay… even if there is no book festival the town is fun to see since it’s completely over-run with books and bookshops

    • mee says:

Helen, wow great to know Hay is good to go anytime! I’ll definitely go! Funny about Bracknell. It’s such a small town I wouldn’t think anyone I know would know anyone there lol.

    • mee says:

stu, I think that’s one of the things I love about London. That it’s busy :D. I enjoy living here so much!

  • JoV says:

I’m glad we have a hand in helping you filling up your bookshelf. Yes, what is a home without bookshelf! Hope to explore other places Jackie may introduce, but Bracknell would be hard to beat! :)

Yes, bank holidays. Until you mentioned it, it just occurred to me indeed there was no reason for the hols, but what the heck. Did you enjoy this one? because the next one will be in August! :)

    • mee says:

Jo, I’m sure there’s reason for the holidays, just not very obvious :P
Okay I have to remember the next one in August. I might plan something around it!

  • JoV says:

By the way, I’m camera shy. :)

  • sakura says:

I love bank holidays! Looking forward to seeing what you got:)

Doing the happy dance!!!! So happy and thanks SO much, Di! Glad to know you’ve been bonding with book bloggers already and started filling your shelves. What titles did you get?? :D

I obviously went to Bracknell at the wrong time of year — I thought it was a hideous place when I visited! ;-) I’m not much of a fan of 1960s architecture.

You’ll also find that there are historical reasons for the Bank Holidays; they were set up under the original Bank Holidays Act 1871. This restricted banks to closing on just a handful of weekdays a year, previously they closed at the hint of any kind of religious day (ie. more than 30 different saints days).

You’ll find there are far fewer public holidays here in the UK than there are in Oz, and there is essentially only one bank holiday left for the rest of the year, on the last weekend of August.

    • mee says:

kimbofo, Bracknell is very small, and very quiet too I thought. But definitely not hideous lol.

I’m sure there are historical reasons for the Bank Holidays, just not many people know! Thanks for the enlightenment. 30 public holidays sounds awesome lol. I just checked that UK (England) has 8 public holidays, while Aussie (NSW) has 9, so actually it isn’t that different. (I thought Oz had many more too but it doesn’t)
