04.Aug.2010 Toys and Booker

macbookxbox360eliteWii

With so many toys coming into Mee’s headquarter in the past few weeks (MacBook, XBox360, Wii), something gotta take the backseat. Reading doesn’t, but I guess blogging does. Coincidentally I’m reading One Hundred Years of Solitude which takes a while to read, while I only have one book review in the backlog. What can I say, the universe just seems to conspire for me not to write anything.

the slapMeanwhile, have you checked out the Booker longlist? This year I have read 1 book, which is a great improvement from the usual uum.. nil. I read The Slap by Christos Tsiolkas earlier this year and I’m glad to see it there, just so we have another Australian apart from Peter Carey (hasn’t he won enough?). There are some brilliant bits in the book and some boring bits, but all in all, a rather worthy read. Most Australians are quite surprised that the book gets so much attention overseas (what with Commonwealth Writers’ Prize and now The Booker), because it is soo Melbournians… I am too. I lived in Melbourne for 6 years before so it is a book I’m glad I read, but I’m not sure how other people relate to it. Perhaps UK’s contemporary suburban life is not that far off than what we have here down under.

Apart from that, one book that piques my interest the most is Room by Emma Donoghue, and I know I’m not alone in this. Looks like Room starts popping up everywhere on the blogosphere. I’m not however rushing to buy and read it. I’m more likely to sit back and watch the battle field from the side, waiting until the dust settles before approaching any of them.

I am an adopted Melbournian, and I do love books set here (not that they’re ever set anywhere near my far-flung, windswept corner of the city!). I had my reservations about ‘The Slap’, as set out in my review earlier this year, but it is very good in places. The funny thing is that most of the reviews I’ve read say the same thing, but disagree on which parts are good and bad…

Tony, thanks for visiting. I haven’t actually read other books set in Melbourne. This is my first! I’ve read your review before you came here. I think the problem with multiple point of views is that some you may like some you may not. Generally not my preference for narration, I like book with single narrator. My favorites in The Slap is Rose the mother and Manolis the Greek old man. Got really bored with the two teenagers.

  • That is an impressive amount of new toys!

It is interesting to hear the Australian perspective of The Slap. I can imagine that some people aren’t very happy about that image of Australians being read around the world. I think that suburban life in the UK is a bit different (we don’t have so many barbeques!) but the general human interactions are very similar.

I hope that you enjoy Room when you finally get to it. I think it will be everywhere soon!

Jackie, the one thing I can really relate with in the book is the barbeque! Haha. From my point of view it’s interesting to see the other cultures portrayed in the book. Australia is very diverse and we have migrants from all over the world, so I’m sure everybody has different stories. The Slap covered some, which I’m glad to have the insight into.

I can see that Room has got your vouch. I look forward to reading it!

We’ve been obsessed with our PS3 lately, so reading has definitely been sliding… so I completely understand the new lack of time to blog!

I think that there are some universal themes that resonate with readers everywhere in The Slap, namely the issue of correcting children, but I also found the peek into urban Australia really interesting as well. We talked a bit in the past of how the Aussie perspective on this one might be quite different from others, but I really found that the book provided me with a glimpse of an Australia I hadn’t really seen before (in literature or otherwise).

Steph, price of PS3 is still quite higher in comparison with the other 2 consoles (almost twice!), so I’m not rushing to get it. Too bad for Sony, since PS2 is possibly my favorite console of all time, apart from Nintendo DS :D

I feel the same as you about The Slap. As I told Jackie above, Australia consists of so many different people and cultures, so I’m glad to get a glimpse of some of them. I liked to hear the characters’ opinions on correcting children too, though they didn’t take it further than I hoped.

like to hear your views on slap and some nice toys ,all the best stu

  • I really want to read both, The Slap and Room. Not a big Peter Carey fan. although that might be an unfair statement as I’ve only read the one book by him.

Congratulations on the new toys : MacBook = super x 2 nice! Wii = nice! XBox = nice! Hope you’re enjoying them!

anothercookie, I saw your review on Peter Carey. I have Oscar and Lucinda and The True History of Kelly Gang on my pile and hope to get to them some time. As they both won the Booker I hope to like them to a degree at least.

  • I haven’t read anything from that Booker list, but like you, Room does catch my interest. I’m not sure I want to read it so soon though. There are plenty more books that I’m interested in at this point.

Oh, and so so nice that you’ve got a MacBook! I’d love to get one for myself too one day. =) Enjoy your new toys!

    • mee says:

Michelle, I don’t think I’ll read Room soon as well. Too many books and all.

The MacBook is my first Mac and I love it to bits! The price of Mac laptops are pretty good these days compared to the past. You should check it out. You’d find that other laptops have very similar prices while Mac laptop is of higher quality.

  • Ah, I have the same toys and, yes, they do impact on other aspects of life!

I have read Room so far from the longlist and will be reviewing it next week. I have read mixed things about The Slap and my curiosity alone will have me picking it up soon.

  • Suko says:

Mee, to be honest I hadn’t heard of The Slap or Room before venturing here. Don’t worry, soon you will be back to blogging more often, once the novelty of the “new toys” wears off. :)

  • kay says:

That’s some interesting new toys you got there! I can definitely understand why other activities would be put aside a little.
I haven’t read The Slap yet, but it’s been tempting me for a while. The comments I have read on it were mostly positive, too!

    • mee says:

kay, The Slap is interesting in that it’s such an angry book yet many people seem to connect with it to some degree. Would love to know what you think of it!

  • Mark David says:

You have both an XBox and a Wii? Wow, you’re one serious gamer :)

By the way, did you play Starcraft before? Starcraft 2′s been released, but I’m sure you already know about that.

    • mee says:

Well yea I am hahaa. Apart from those I have 2 Nintendo DS, PS2 and GameCube (and older consoles). I actually never play Starcraft, just saw my brother did. RTS is not my favorite genre of game.
