Sydney Writers’ Festival is coming again (15-23 May)! I went last year and I am going this weekend. Yay.

One thing about the festival is New South Wales Premier’s Literary Awards that are always announced at the beginning of the festival. Here are the shortlists this year for The Christina Stead Prize for Fiction, which is “named in honor of the highly acclaimed Australian novelist and short-story writer, offered for a book of fiction. The award may be made for either a novel or a collection of stories”:

Yes folks, we can claim J.M. Coetzee as Australian now! And guess what? He won!

I haven’t heard of this award before, but there are some great books there. I have Jasper Jones on my TBR pile and all the others look interesting (apart from Summertime which I hated!)

  Jackie, it’s a very local award so I doubt anyone outside of Australia (or even outside of the state) knows about it. But since I live here right now I thought it’d be interesting to showcase their selections. I look forward to your thoughts on Jasper Jones. So far none of the shortlisted has caught my interest much.

i read Jasper Jones earlier this year and loved it. haven’t read any of the others, but i’m definitely going to go look them up and will be adding a few to my wishlist, i’m sure.

I have been wanting to read Wanting since I read about it in Karen’s (BookBath) blog, because I’m a Dickens fan and because the cover is gorgeous haha. I’ve also been meaning to read Summertime because I loved Disgrace. But the rest I haven’t seen before. I especially love that cover of Ransom, I’ll definitely keep an eye out for it now. And that 88 Lines about 44 Women is such a wonderful title!

  claire, I haven’t read any review on Wanting, I guess that’s why I haven’t got the urge to read it (I’ll check BookBath later). But I agree the cover is gorgeous, as with 88 Lines about 44 Women! Actually all the covers here are quite nice. I’m not sure if I want to read Summertime though. I’ll probably read his other works first (I loved Disgrace too).
