31.May.2010 Book Porn: Pretty Tomes

I spent the second $100 Dymocks gift card I got from my credit card points. [insert the usual rant about book price in Australia here] I know I don’t get high quantity in the number of individual books, but do you think I get it in the quantity of pages?

east of eden

anna karenina

a suitable boy

Books bought:
East of Eden by John Steinbeck (ripped deckled edge! weee!)
Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy (read-along next year anyone?)
A Suitable Boy by Vikram Seth (because it’s the thickest novel ever?)

And not shown on the pictures: Metro 2033 by Dmitry Glukhovsk, a science fiction book which was recently made into a video game. I gave hubby one book to choose and I don’t know how on earth he could pick that one.

The seth? Which one Stu? :)

update: Okay just realized which one you meant. Doh. Yeap love A Suitable Boy’s cutout too!

  • Steph says:

I’ve read East of Eden and Anna K, and both are pretty fantastic, so it’s wonderful to see them in such wonderful “packaging”. I admit, I’ve not made it through A Suitable Boy (yet), but the copy you have really is beautiful. A fantastic way to spend your gift voucher!

Steph, I’m excited with these books. Now I just need to find a nice chunk of time to devour each one!

  • Sasha says:

What you lacked in quantity, you made up for in, er, chunkiness. ;)

I ran amok in a bookstore a couple of hours ago [yet again, augh], and I picked up the Pevear translation of Anna Karenina. And then, a few minutes after, I hastily put it back, saying, “What the hell do you think you’re doing?” I don’t think I can handle that book. It scares me, it really does.

And everyone keeps telling me that Vikram Seth’s chunkster is an easy read. Sure, I say, sure.

    • mee says:

Sasha, I have a very funny image of you running amok in a bookstore haha! I don’t know whose translation my Anna Karenina is, but it’s Vintage so I can trust their selection, can I?
I’m guessing A Suitable Boy is an easy read, you just need, uum, LOTS of time to read 1000+ pages.. :)

Books sound really expensive out there. Though you got some good books.

    • mee says:

vivienne, I should’ve mentioned that I got these 4 books for $100 already with 20% discount off their original price! So they’re actually even more expensive!

  • Wow! Best of luck with that haul!

I attempted reading A Suitable Boy when I was sixteen, and I couldn’t finish it. Have East of Eden here, and have never tried the Tolstoy! Looking forward to your thoughts/reviews.

anothercookiecrumbles, I imagine a 16 year-old probably doesn’t have enough patience to finish a 1000+ page book? Well it’s even scary for adults!

  • LOL! Great value per page :-) I haven’t read any of those but own them all and want to do so soon. The length keeps putting them further down the pile, but hopefully you’ll persuade me that it is worth the effort.

I really want to read A Suitable Boy sometime, but I’ve yet to buy it. I always pick it up in a bookstore, but then put it down again because I don’t believe I could ever finish it. This edition looks very pretty though, I might just have to give in.

    • mee says:

Iris, I love this copy of A Suitable Boy because it’s hardcover (apart from the nice design). I’d been thinking to get it a couple of times at the bookstore but it always was the paperback and it just looked like it’s gonna break because of the size! So hardcover is good.

  • JoV says:

Definitely! get value in chunkiness. Hats off to anyone who finished “The Suitable Boy”. I was daunted by the sheer chunkiness. :p

    • mee says:

JoV, I want to read A Suitable Boy even more now, because everybody is so daunted by its size. It’s not fair to the poor book. =]

  • sakura says:

Great pix! I loved both Anna Karenina and A Suitable Boy. Am planning to read East of Eden one day.

  • Mark David says:

Haha, “book porn”! All those books are thick! And I just LOVE that cover of Anna Karenina! Though I’m still not sure if I can commit to reading that book with you next year. We’ll see :)

Gorgeous choices! I’ve read Anna and East and they’re both intense and wonderful. I love East’s pages. I always get a bit of a thrill when I pick up a book with pages like that. Enjoy!

Oooh, I so love Anna Karenina! And though I have Seth’s Golden Gate Bridge, I’ve not read Suitable Boy. I’m looking forward to your thoughts on them, and what a wise way to spend your money! ;)

  • Mae says:

Oooh, very nice stash! I love the cover of Anna Karenina and Suitable Boy. They’re the ultimate door stoppers though!

  • claire says:

Ooooohhh Di!!!! Lovely, lovely books! I’m so excited for you! My copy of A Suitable Boy is not as gorgeous as yours but I loooooove that book to pieces, so I hope you enjoy it. My East of Eden is the same edition, although mine’s used and a little worn. Shall we read that together instead of Mice and Men? :D Also, I want to read Anna Karenina too, and will let you know when I get a copy. Great, great stack you have there.

    • mee says:

Ooh I didn’t know you’ve read A Suitable Boy! I would love to read East of Eden with you! And Anna Karenina! :D

  • charley says:

Lovely photos! Steinbeck is one of my favorites, although I haven’t read East of Eden.

    • mee says:

charley, I haven’t read any Steinbeck! That should change soon as I have East of Eden and Of Mice and Men on my tbr pile now!
