03.May.2010 April Incoming Books

Last month I redeemed a Dymocks gift card from my credit card points, valued at $100! (Actually, I got TWO cards, but I’ll save the other one for later.) So I hopped away, like a girl going to candy store. Or just say book store, literally.

Not long after I realized that the books here were so expensive that $100 really doesn’t mean much at all compared to overseas online stores. I’m all for local bookstores, but when the price is NOTHING near competitive, it puts me in a tough position (with a very clear winner in my opinion). But this time I got my gift card so I was happy and tried to maximize my $100 as much as possible. My priority was books that I couldn’t get at my libraries.

Here’s what I got:

Books April 2010

Winnie the Pooh by A. A. Milne (colored an all, aaww)

The Unbearable Lightness of Being by Milan Kundera (what’s with the white dog on the cover?)

The Bloody Chamber by Angela Carter (which was the thinnest of the bunch and cost 1/4 of that $100… Already read and reviewed.)

The Book Thief by Markus Zusak (talking about Markus Zusak, check out the last video from First Tuesday Book Club with him as the guest with Sarah Waters, discussing Solar – McEwan and Strange case of Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde — picked by Sarah Waters. I never thought Zusak could be sooo cutely Australian!)

Oh and I let hubby chose one book and he got Sherlock Holmes in hardcover. A nice pick!

Apart from those, I got these three books from lovely fellow bloggers:

Books April 2010

I received not one, but TWO Angela Carter’s books from our generous Angela Carter Month host Claire! The Magic Toyshop and Nights at the Circus.

And After Dark by Haruki Murakami from my best blogging buddy Michelle!

Thanks you two! I’m excited about these books! <3

THEN, did you get your free comics on Saturday? I got two! (I queued another time after loosing my sweater and hair, because they limited one comic per customer. Hope it’s not too big of a crime.)

Wish I could keep coming back for more, because there were a few that I wanted! But I was running out of disguise.

Hubby picked Iron Man/Thor. He’s really into any kind of super-heroes. I’m into anything cute.

Kinokuniya was jam-packed with people on Saturday! Apart from people hunting free comics, there were a lot that actually bought some (since graphic novels and comics were on 20% sale too on the day). Then there was also Cosplay going on. What a weird day. We saw lots of people dressing up as Star Wars characters at the book aisles, and some other fantasy characters. I took photo with a giant R2D2 Dalek (with a man inside). If a random non-reader visited Kino that day she must have thought there were SO MANY READERS in the world!

It was my first time getting the free comics on Free Comic Book Day. I’ll look out for the day again next year. Too fun!

  • Ooh lots and lots of lovely new books!

I’m trying not to comment on any posts that aren’t Persephone-related this week (it’s too overwhelming otherwise) but I couldn’t resist the mention of Carter!

I love Winnie-the-Pooh and After Dark is a very good Murakami (I believe that Dolcebellezza is bringing JLC IV forward to June, which is very soon indeed!)

Claire, I’m very intrigued with Persephone books and your Persephone week, but I haven’t got a chance to read their catalogue to find a book I want to read, and a week is far too short for me to read one full book. But I keep an eye on them when I can. Have fun!

ps: I look forward to Bellezza’s JLC IV too!

$25 for a paperback book?!?! The mind boggles! I had heard that books in Australia were expensive, but that seems insane! I’m not sure my budget could handle me living there!

I hope you enjoy The Unbearable Lightness of Being – I read it pre-blogging and found it really interesting. I struggled with parts of it, but I still think back on parts of the philosophy that Kundera explores, so obviously it has stuck with me!

Steph, lol insane is the word! Some special books are published as trade paperback (bigger size paperback? we hardly have hardcovers here) and they’re usually around $30-$35! The price is better for some classics and YA/children books (that’s why I got a couple of those above), but it just seems random. Some classics are very expensive even if they’re very thin and small paperback (yes, around $25). I don’t know how they price the books really. Needles to say, I rarely buy books full price here. My main resources are libraries, book sale, online stores, and secondhand books.

I hope to read The Unbearable Lightness this year!

  • JoV says:

Have “Unbearable” in my pile now, hope you enjoy it.
Hope you enjoy all your freebies too!

  • Nymeth says:

I’m in the same position when it comes to supporting local bookshops. I want to, but to do so means paying for 1 book what I’d pay for 3 online :\

Hooray for Pooh! I loved that book so much more than I expected to.

    • mee says:

Nymeth, exactly! I guess it doesn’t matter as much if you only buy and read 1-2 books per year as normal people do, but it doesn’t work for us =\

I have always loved Pooh but never read the book. How bad am I? :)

  • Gnoe says:

Great score! The funny thing is that they all look so *cut* :)

    (drooling right now)

Haha! Yeah, that is a rather odd cover for The Unbearable Lightness. The one I often see in bookstores is the serious-looking red cover. But that dog drawing looks cute though :)

It seems I have the same cover of After Dark as the one you have. Congrats and hooray for Michelle for giving you that book. It’s one of my favorite Murakami novels and I reeeeeeeeally hope you like it :)

    • mee says:

David, for The Unbearable Lightness, the one I usually saw on the net was the one with floating hat.
And for After Dark, I’m quite sure that’s the only cover published so far. I reeeeeeally hope I’d like it too! ;)

  • Lydia says:

I know, $100 doesn’t stretch nearly as far as it used to. Books have become so expensive. As much as I am willing to pay $15-20 a book (if I really want it) sort of like there are some people who don’t mind paying $500 for a pair of killer stilettos, I still can’t help but feel annoyed by hike in prices. That’s why I’ve started to exchange trips to the bookstore for trips to the library!

Happy Reading! All those Angela Carter titles look great.

Lydia, I’m not sure where you live, but here in Australia the book price has always been sky high. That’s why I rarely buy books full price and make use of my libraries as much as possible!
Thanks for first time visiting! :)

  • Mae says:

I rarely buy brand new books now in Aust. They’re so expensive. If I do buy from stores, there’s always discounts. It’s hard but it’s just too expensive.

A great collection you’ve got there. Winnie the Pooh!! I hope you’ll like Kundera. The dog is named after a famous Russian literary character and features endearingly through the novel. I loved it. It’s also hand drawn by Kundera himself!

    • mee says:

Mae, yea the full price books here are too expensive for me too.

Thanks for the info on the dog! Those are such interesting facts!

  • claire says:

Di, Unbearable Lightness is indeed more popular for its bowler hat covers (in different editions), but that is the only one with a dog that I’ve seen. You’ll know soon enough when you read it the significance of the dog (and the bowler hat). That book was my intro to Kundera, whom you know is one of my absolute fave authors.

And that Pooh cover is so pretty! Mine is the orange one (which is also nice). I love it so much.. hope you enjoy! I’ll be rereading it with my kids soon.

I will be looking forward to your thoughts on The Book Thief (because I’ve been wanting to read it since forever, but always get sidetracked by something else) and The Magic Toyshop (very curious how you’ll take it). You have so many Angela Carters on the pile!

Btw, what is that free comic thing? So intriguing. I love comics.. will check out your link..

    • mee says:

Claire, I’ve been wanting to read The Book Thief since forever too lol. Always get sidetracked by something else too. I love all kind of covers for Winnie the Pooh! Funny I never read the book, so I need to do it soon. I hope to read Unbearable Lightness this year. I’ve been wanting to since forever too (But your enthusiasm made it the more urgent :).

Oh remember that the Free Comic Book Day happens every first Saturday in May every year around the world. Mark your calendar! (Should’ve told all of you before it happened this year..)

  • claire says:

I’m back! I checked out the free comic book day.. arrgh.. missed it by a few days! I’ll keep it in mind for next year.

  • Sakura says:

I really liked Unbearable Lightness of Being but haven’t read anything else by Kundera. And I’m soooo jealous you have a Kinokuniya where you are! I want one in London too!
.-= [Sakura´s last blog: Persephone Reading Week] =-.

    • mee says:

Sakura, there’s no Kinokuniya in London? That’s just outrageous! Before Sydney I lived in Singapore and Kino is there too. Kino remains my favorite bookshop to browse around, though I rarely buy books from it.

  • Rebecca Reid says:

I admit I love Winnie-the-Pooh. Great collection of books!

    • mee says:

Rebecca, I do remember your post on Pooh. Might be one of the reasons that pushed me to pursue the book ;)
