Orange Prize 2010

The Orange Prize for fiction has just released its longlist. I was excited to find that I have 2 of the books on the list!

Secret SonThe White Woman on the Green Bicycle

Both books were obtained last year (I wrote about them here and here).

I was interested by Secret Son because it’s Moroccan (author and setting) and The White Woman on the Green Bicycle for its Trinidad origin (again, author and setting).

Jackie and Simon both made their predictions and wrote more about the other books. I haven’t heard of the rest of the others, apart from these two and This is How by M. J. Hyland (who is sort of Australian and whose book was featured on First Tuesday Book Club last year and has piqued my interest since then), The Help by Kathryn Stockett (which I have planned to read) and A Gate at the Stairs by Lorrie Moore (whose short story I read a while back and liked). Oh and of course the big names like Wolf Hall, The Little Stranger, and The Lacuna, but they don’t need more mentioning, do they?

Which book piques your interest? Which one do you plan to read?

  • I’m most interested in The Rehearsal as it seems to be dividing opinion at the moment. I’ve ordered a copy from the library, so hope to get to it soon.

I have now read 5 books from the long list:

Little Stranger (entertaining, but not winning material)
Wolf Hall (writing style too annoying for me, but it will probably win)
The Help (fantastic story, will probably make short list)
Black Mamba Boy (great story, but poorly written)
This is How (Great writing, but a bit bleak!)

I plan to read Small Wars and The Rehearsal and then whatever else make the short list. I look forward to seeing what you make of the two books that caught your attention – perhaps you’ll make me add them to my reading list too!!

I’d never heard of The Rehearsal before and just checked it out. I heard of Sadie Jones of course, but I don’t think I’d heard of Small Wars. It’s interesting how people are drawn towards all different books. Thanks for sharing your list Jackie! As always I look forward to your thoughts on prize contenders. For myself, I’m not sure if I get to read my books before the winner announcement.

I absolutely intend to read Wolf Hall, The LIttle Stranger and The Lacuna. I may read more though :) And isn’t First Tuesday Book Club the best? It really needs to be on every week..no, every day…

  • I really enjoyed this post Mee, short and sweet and gets to the point. The line about the big contenders made me laugh too. I am off to read your thoughts on the two you have read as I have heard little about them.

Simon, I’m sorry to disappoint you, but I haven’t read those two books. I did only say that I have them ;)

  • JoV says:

Laila Lalami!!!! I read Moroccan literature too. Of the past, I usually read the book of the winners. Can’t wait to see who gets into the shortlist!! :D

    • mee says:

JoV, I’ve never read Moroccan literature. Let me know if you have any recommendation! About the Orange prize, I try to read one book from the longlist/shortlist/winner pool. I don’t necessarily go for the winner. :)

      • JoV says:

Search for Tahar Ben Jelloun (The Blinding absence of light), Mohammed Choukri, and Tahir Shah (Tahir is a British, but lives in Morocco. Caliph’s House and Arabian nights are two about Morocco) and a true story by Malika Oufkir (La Prisonneire), Malika spent 20 years in a desert gaol with her family because of their father (General Oufkir) planned assasination of King Hassan II. sad but very inspiring story.

Oh wow, JoV, thanks for the book list! I have browsed around for them to see if something jumps out to me. They all definitely sound interesting! Tahar Ben Jelloun probably interests me the most right now.

The three that interest me the most: The Lacuna, Wolf Hall, and The Little Stranger. Those I’ll most surely read. The Help, maybe. Have heard so many good things about it, but I’m a little leery, just because it’s so popular and the writer is unfamiliar to me. Ungrounded fears, most probably, but you know how it is. :)

Claire, so I can see you’re going for the big names ;). Somehow those three don’t pique my interest much. I’m definitely curious about The Help, so I’m happy it got into the Orange longlist. Sort of confirmed the literary value :)

  • Definitely interested in Sarah Waters. As for Wolf Hall, I’ve seen it so often, I don’t like it already. (That seems kind of weird, but yea..)

I think I’d want to try Lorrie Moore, and maybe a couple of other titles as time goes on.

    • mee says:

Lol I so understand that about Wolf Hall. And actually I feel the same about Little Strangers. So many people have read and reviewed it I don’t feel like following the crowd..

  • I have read four so far: The Little Stranger; Wolf Hall; The Rehearsal; The Help (the first three are reviewed on my blog and the last should be some time this week).

I am most interested in reading The Still Point and Hearts and Minds.
