I first read about foot binding in Pearl S. Buck's The Good Earth many years ago and remember asking why women had to undergo such torment (I was very young then!) BBC also showed some footage of bound women in China and what was surprising was that they were walking and running around like gazelles. But it was still disturbing. For reading challenges, my motto is always “aim low first” :P. I need to remind myself all the time about quality over quantity, otherwise I could get a bit depressed about how slow I read!
