08.Nov.2009 Bookish Movie Mini-Reviews: Dracula and Mao’s Last Dancer + Holiday Swap

Dracula (1992)

I told you earlier when I reviewed Dracula that I was going to watch its movie soon. So I did.

It’s directed by Francis Ford Coppola and has a line of stars: Gary Oldman, Anthony Hopkins, Winona Ryder, and Keanu Reeves. The movie is definitely more sexual (sometimes unnecessarily I thought). The main, huge, difference with the original novel is that Mina is Dracula’s wife in previous life and she remembers it! What an odd decision to make.

The movie is all a bit cheesy for me. Perhaps I’m just not a fan of vampire movies. I’m not a fan of the book too after all. I kinda liked Gary Oldman as the old Dracula, with the red robe and funny hair (see the trailer). He really looks creepy there to the point of being unrecognizable.

Talking about vampire movies, I definitely liked Interview With the Vampire more. (Please don’t tell me to watch Buffy or Twilight)

Mao’s Last Dancer (2009)

I’m so much more excited about the second movie. It’s just recently out in Australia and I haven’t heard anyone at the other part of the sea mention it, though it’s pretty big over here (movie and book).

Mao’s Last Dancer follows the extraordinary journey of Li Cunxin, plucked from poor Chinese village by Mao’s cultural delegates and taken to Beijing to study ballet. During a cultural exchange to America, he fell in love with the country and an American woman, and decided to not go back. The decision caused an outrage that forbid him to go back to his home country and meet his family for a long time. Li is now an Australian.

I’d say I haven’t seen book-to-movie adaptation that is so mind blowing for the longest time! The dance was simply mesmerizing and the journey fascinating! I’m not sure if I want to read the book, because I can’t imagine how it could portray the dancing as well as the film.

The only flaw I found was some stilted acting, but it’s so minor I’m willing to let it go. Highly recommended. Please watch the trailer so you can have some sense of what I’m talking about!

Mao's Last Dancer
The Book

The last bookish thing I’d like to give a shout is the Book Blogger Holiday Swap! It’s my first time joining. I can’t remember how I missed it last year. I must’ve been very busy. Two years ago I joined something similar with the folks over at Bookcrossing and I had so much fun! So I’m happy we have something similar for book bloggers. The dateline to sign up is 12 November 2009. I hope you can join us!

  • I haven’t heard of Mao’s Last Dancer – I wonder if it has been released here yet? I’ll keep an eye out for it.

I haven’t watched any Dracula films either. I’m not a fan of vampires, so although I’m interested in it I’m not sure I want to actually sit through it!

    Thanks for the reviews!

According to imdb, it’s supposed to be out in USA on 4 November, but it hasn’t mentioned UK. Hope it would get there some time!

Dracula the movie wasn’t so bad. It was more of a fun over the top kind of movie rather than deep or scary.

Haha! Don’t worry, I most definitely won’t tell you to watch Twilight :p

If you didn’t enjoy Coppola’s version of Dracula, I doubt you’ll enjoy other adaptations at all. Interview With The Vampire was certainly an entertaining kind of vampire film because it’s got quite a colorful, and inventive, story. I do think it’s the best I’ve seen so far.

I’ve seen the book Mao’s Last Dance before and apparently it’s had splendid reviews. I think I’d want to read the book, perhaps just not in the immediate future. As for the movie, it looks fantastic and so I’d like to watch it too :)

Have you noticed that the girl in the film is also the girl in the other ballet movie Center Stage? I loved her in that film :)

My husband said that the best vampire movie he’s seen is From Dusk Till Dawn (he hasn’t watched Interview with the Vampire though). Not that I’m looking for another vampire movie.

No, I did not notice it’s the same girl! I remember very little about Center Stage actually. Should see it again some time.

      • Mark David says:

From Dusk Till Dawn is a good movie if you’re looking for some vampire fighting action, but not if you’re looking for that classical romantic atmosphere of vampire lore. I wouldn’t give the actors in Dusk Till Dawn an Oscar, but it’s a pretty decent action movie… and on the topic of vampire action, I’d go for Underworld Part 1 starring the beautiful Kate Beckinsale. Kate, in my opinion, is the hottest ass-kicking vampire heroine you’d find in the big screens :)

I don’t like action movie. I don’t like vampire movie. I wonder whether I would like action vampire movie… Mm..

I haven’t seen Underworld for obvious reason, but I may check it out if you say it’s good ;)

  • Nymeth says:

I quite liked the movie version of Interview with the Vampire. Coppola’s Dracula not so much :P And Mao’s Last Dancer looks fantastic!

I’m very glad you’re joining the swap this year – thank you for spreading the word!

If your taste for vampire movies is anything to go by, I’m sure you’d like Mao’s Last Dancer ;)

Looking forward to the swap. Great work as always Nymeth!

I think Keanu Reeves is a horrible actor (he always sounds like a stoned surfer), so I can’t bring myself to watch Dracula.

Mao’s Last Dancer looks great, though. I wonder if we’ll get it here.

I think Keanu is horrible actor too. It’s surprising how he survives all this time. He’s not at all prominent in Dracula though, so you can almost ignore him.

I do hope you would get to see Mao’s Last Dancer.

  • Megan says:

I love this idea–I just finished Gone with the Wind and haven’t seen the movie in ages! I think it will get moved to the top of the netflix queue!

Surprisingly I have never watched or read Gone with the Wind! I intend to read the book soon though. I have a good feeling about it since my experience hasn’t been tainted by the movie, so I’ll go into it with fresh eyes :)

  • Sakura says:

Mao’s Last Dancer looks incredible. I can’t wait for it to come to the UK.
Regarding vampire movies, I really liked Queen of the Damned which was a sequel to Interview with the Vampire and has a totally different cast. A smaller movie, but better, I thought.

Mao’s Last Dancer appeals to me. I think I’d really enjoy it. Not so sure about Dracula. . . .

    Thanks for your reviews.

Suko, I hope you get to watch Mao. I think you’d really like it. Dracula is just for silly fun if you’re up to it ;)
