So it's just perfect that you heard it from your boyfriend ;). Apart from all sorts of entertainment medium, I heard the story many times from my dad too. He's always quick to point out elements of the Monkey King that was borrowed by contemporary anime/manga/tv series/movies. Sounds exciting! Well I'm happy that a Western writer like him would put some attention to the old Chinese legend. About time! :) Yes it's very controversial and brave of Yang to do that.
