29.Jul.2009 Fables Vol 2: Animal Farm by Bill Willingham

Fables Vol 2: Animal Farm by Bill WillinghamIn this second volume of Fables, Snow White and her sister Red Rose goes to visit Animal Farm, a place where all the fables that don’t pass as humans live. It’s interesting to see all the non-human creatures take the stage this time, but I didn’t get how some of them live there, like the woman with many kids living in a big shoe (aren’t they from Mother Goose?).

On the first night the sisters stay, Colin Piggy, the youngest of the three pigs gets killed. That’s gruesome. It is somehow disturbing to see one your fairy tale character gets killed, and for not a very good reason too in my opinion. They’re supposed to be immortal. But in Fables apparently they can die.

So Snow is forced to investigate and we are introduced to the rebellious force in the farm. Of course, at the end justice is served and the fables seem to be able to sort things out once again. Like the first volume, it’s pretty good introduction to the world of fables.

Some new fairy tale characters that make appearances are the ones from Three Little Pigs, Jungle Book, Goldilocks and the Three Bears, and random giants. Does anyone know from which story Little Boy Blue comes from? (Okay I just searched Wiki and he’s apparently from some obscure nursery rhyme.)

Is it obscure? I knew that rhyme when I was small – but I had this great big Mother Goose book with cool pictures, and I know a lot of obscure nursery rhymes. I thought Boy Blue was a common one…weird. Glad you’re enjoying Fables!

  • Nymeth says:

I only discovered the nursery rhyme after reading the book and looking it up too. I guess it’s because I’m not from an English speaking country :P

Yea I’m not from an English speaking country too, so it’s probably why that particular nursery rhyme was unknown to me :P. I knew about Mother Goose and its nursery rhymes from a computer game that I played when I was small, but somehow it didn’t have Boy Blue.

I really like this series. I am all caught up now, though, so I have to wait for the new one out in August… I do have the Jack of Fables series to read eventually, though.

I still have quite a few books to go before my library runs out of the series. I’m not sure if they’re gonna buy the new ones. The last time I went to bookstore they didn’t have stock for the series too apart from the first couple. It seems pretty hard to find Fables here in Australia! I haven’t tried to find the Jack of Fables series.

Just dropping by to say that I hope you’ll join in the Japanese Literature Challenge 3 this year. I’d miss you very much if you didn’t!

  • mee says:

Why of course I will join! I just haven’t got the time to do a proper post yet :). Thanks for dropping in Bellezza!

Boy Blue is a really standard rhyme in the US at least. There are more than a few nursery rhyme characters in the Fables universe as well as other non-Fable characters. Bufkin, the flying monkey, is from Wizard of Oz, which I don’t think of as a fairy tale exactly.

I do love this series though. I just finished “The Dark Ages” which came out on Tuesday (at least in the States). The series continues to blow me away. I’m still reeling from this latest volume! I have no idea how to review it…

Jennie, pardon my ignorance. I love the series because I get to know many little things like the nursery rhymes and some “minor” characters I wouldn’t have known otherwise. I don’t think the series are officially published here. I believe people just import them. Lucky one of my libraries has some!

I just find it really interesting to see what crosses oceans and what doesn’t!
