I’m not sure about reading books that are decades old. Language changes dynamically and the books we read tend to reflect current usage, and I’m not sure whether Daphne du Maurier passes the test of time. What did you think about it in the end?

If you’re patient with Rebecca, the rewards are huge…but if you really can’t make it through, you will never go wrong with the 1940s movie version with Laurence Olivier and Joan Fontaine and Dame Judith Anderson who steals the show as the Ultra-Creepy Mrs. Danvers.

I liked Rebecca, but I’m a bit fonder of du Maurier’s other work. In fact, this week I just reviewed Jamaica Inn. I definitely liked it better than Rebecca. But don’t quit. It’s well worth reading.

Yes, definitely don’t give up on “Rebecca.” It does start out slowly, but builds the story in fascinating layers. The slow start gives you time to really get to know the characters and plot situations. It’s certainly duMaurier’s best work. I envy you, reading it for the first time!

Keep going with’ Rebecca’. I think you’ll find it repays your time and trouble.
