15.Jun.2008 Sunday Salon Week #5: Quiet Reading Week

It’s a quiet reading week. I worked late so much I didn’t have much reading. Then I felt kinda sick starting from Saturday afternoon to Sunday. I think it’s because of all the stress. I actually couldn’t sleep well last night because I had bad dreams about work and Harry Potter combined. (That may sound funny, but really it wasn’t fun.)

Anyway, I spent my whole Sunday lying down, switching between dozing off and reading Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. My only complaint about the book is that it’s too big and heavy. My arms got tired holding it up. My Korean friend told me that in Korea they actually divided each of Harry Potter books into several small ones. This is good, if it doesn’t end up more expensive (but of course it would be).

I’m also about a quarter through Dreaming Water by Gail Tsukiyama. So far it’s been too… girlish for my taste. The story is about a woman with Werner’s syndrome. It makes you aged about twice faster than normal. For me the most interesting part though, is about the internment and unfair treatment of Japanese-American in US after the WWII, which I never heard of before until now. Also the downs and troubles of looking Asian in the 70s USA (I’m guessing the author is also half Japanese, so she probably had first-hand experience in this area).

Lastly, I found another great list: Guardian’s the 100 greatest novels of all time. Preface here.

  • If you are interested in reading more about Japanese-American internment camps, you might consider reading Farewell to Manzanar by Jeanne Wakatsuki Houston. It is the author’s memoir about living in the internment camp called Manzanar.

My Sunday is still stretched out ahead of me. I didn’t sleep well either, but my reason had more to do with illness than anything. I probably will try and take a nap later today if I can stop coughing.

    Have a great week!

Equally had a very strange work related dream about someone I don’t work with in a work context that has nothing to do with my job!

Literary: Thanks for the recommendation. Can’t believe I’ve never heard of this fact before!

John: In my dream I think I was so pressured to finish my work otherwise I’d be killed by Lord Voldemort. And I kept trying to finish it but I couldn’t because it was too hard. Something along that line.
