02.Jun.2008 Sunday Salon Week #4: Steve’s List

I met Steve on Friday, a fellow Bookcrosser. He’s going to leave Singapore soon. A bit sad since he and I have been the only regular Bookcrossing members who’ve come to the monthly BC meeting for the past few months.  So after his departure, I’m guessing there won’t be anymore Singapore BC meeting, unless someone new and enthusiastic comes along.

Anyway, even though Steve and I have different tastes in books (he’s more into non-fiction nowadays), I have been enjoying book conversations with him. And he used to read a lot of fictions too. So I asked him what would be his top 5 or top 10 fictions. He gave me this:

1) 1984 by George Orwell
2) The Golden Notebook by Doris Lessing
3) The Trial by Franz Kafka

I haven’t read any of these, but I’ve been planning to for no 1 and 3. 1984 is just a must-read. Kafka’s sounds like Haruki Murakami’s (one of my fave authors). Not so sure about Lessing’s. Sounded like heavy stuff. It’s always interesting to know people’s top books of all time. I’m not sure about mine. I don’t think I have read enough English fictions to make my list of top books of all time. I’ll think about it :)

I have acquired 10 books from him. So much for avoiding to get more books… SHELVES.. NOT.. ENOUGH..

I think Kafka’s writing is brilliant and out-of-this-world. But it’s not everyone’s cup of tea…keeping in mind that his novel was written so long ago…
