07.Jun.2008 48 Hours Start!

Initial post on 48 hours Read-A-Thon
Or should I say it’s supposed to start for me about 24 hours ago.
The plan isn’t going well, since I just knew this week that I had to work on Saturday :(
So that’s almost 24 hours went by for working and sleeping. I did spend probably around 2-3 hours reading the last quarter of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire yesterday night.
I started Dreaming Water by Gail Tsukiyama this morning, just about 0.5-1 hour into it between traveling to and fro work, and between waiting time for my build (it’s programmer’s thing :P).
Off to take shower and read again. Will update here again soon. Look at how other people go if you’re interested. I am :)
Wrap-up – Sunday 10pm
At the end I think I spent less than 10 hours reading time (which is a lot less that I planned). Got too many distractions :(
And I was tired because of all the overtime last week, so I slept quite a bit too on Sunday.
Anyway, I continued a bit of Dreaming Water, but it seemed very bland after the Potter series. I’m kinda worried that all books will be bland after Harry Potter, at least for a while. I also read a short story from Interpreter of Maladies by Jhumpa Lahiri and I’ve started Harry Potter and the Order of Phoenix.
What I Learned
I can no longer read for too long period of time like when I was in school. I used to be able to read for hours a whole day long. Then again, I used to be able to read anywhere, on the most bumpiest ride for example. Not anymore. I get sick reading in car now.
A commitment to read longer does not make me read faster. Well, this should be obvious. But after like a couple of hours of reading and only got to page 70, I really realized that I would definitely not be able to finish a 1000 pages of book in 2 days.
I was pretty surprised to see how fast the other people read! Of course it depends on what books you read, but I wonder if they just skim some parts. I can’t stand to skim, unless the book is really boring.
I’d really love to go back to how I used to read. Right now I need to do something else after 1-2 hours of reading. When I was in primary school to high school, 2 hours were nothing.
